Default which engine for a ka??

something some of you ka owners might be able to help me with.

my girlfriends got a 99 ka, and ive come to the conclusion that it is dangerously slow!! so we want to change the engine.

we dont want masses of power, just something to make it drivable!!

id rather not go for turbo power as im an n/a lover at heart.

the options ive come up with so far are:

1400 zetec from a fiesta
1600 efi cvh
1600 zetec.

any ideas if any will fit?? any other suggestions?? any companies that might have an idea??

cheers

They will all fit. you can put any engine in any car if you put your mind to it.
but in your case i would put a RS turbo lump in it
its been done loads of times before so there is plenty of people who can give you help along the way.

Try looking at www.pumaspeed.co.uk a few engine conversions available there, bit pricey though.

as Daz said above, Pumaspeed do engine conversions for the ka - the 1.6 zetec s (fiesta), and the 1.7 zetec s (puma).

You are looking at probably 1.5 - 2k for the 1.6 and 2.5k + for the puma. I know one bloke in the kaklub, who has had a 1.7 conversion done by them. There was a blue ka in performance ford a few months back who had also had it done by another company (cant recall the name) but they took out the front crossmember.

You could always look at Euro Engines, as they do an exchange deal, so you give them your standard, and you can either have a stage 1, 2 or 3 in return. Stage one is about Ł600, Stage 2 about Ł900 ish and Stage 3 = Ł1400. The Stage 3 is a 1400cc version (bored out). A couple of people in the klub have had this, with decent results (90bhp +), but suffers from fuel consumption a touch. Whereas the 1.6 and 1.7 conversions should keep you at 30mpg+ easily.

1400cc = 90bhp ish, 1600cc = 105bhp ish, 1700cc = 125bhp ish.

The RS Turbo lump in a ka has been done a few times, but I am still yet to see a reliable every day car as a result.

Hope that is of some help.....

cheers for the replys people.

well ive been looking in to it, ive looked on the pumaspeed site etc but they want far too much money for it.

i am planning to do all the work myself, because as said above, i think these companys are charging a hell of a lot of money for what it is.

ive ruled out the cvh, basically cos its a cvh!! and the 1400 fiesta lump as it has the intake at the front and the exhaust at the back unlike the ka lump.

so it looks like the 1600 zetec is the only one left, like i said i dont want masses of performance just something to make the car nicely drivable on any road, not knocking it cos i love to drive it but i feel it is dangerously slow for motorway driving.

cheers for the links etc, but does anyone know of anyone who has done the 1600 zetec conversion?? id use the ka gearbox so the mounts that side should be fine, its just the engine mount on the drivers side i cant seem to get my head round.

any more help greatly appreciated.

is the intake on the 1600 zetec not the same?

the intake on the puma 1.7 has the intake at the front, so assume the 1.6 does too.....

what cant u quite get on the engine mount on the drivers side? I might be able to find an email address for a mate who has done the 1.7 conversion himself, so might be able to help with that sort of thing....
As far as I know, they just had to fabricate a new engine mount to replace the old one....

The intake on the 1600 zetec is at the rear, like most conventional engines, im refering to the zetec in the escort, not the zetec in the fiesta zetec-s.

the main prob with the engine mount is the ka one bolts to the fron and side of the block where as the zetec bolts up at the rear of the block, and being a ka, space is a little tight!!

i havent really got down to it and started routing about under the car yet to see what will go, its just something thats being planned so i can buy an engine and rebuild it ready for the job.

im gonna talk to severn valley to see what sort of mount they used on thier 2.0 zetec conversions.
